SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2024 – How to get started

We’ll discuss creative strategies for generating ideas, and look at musical examples for inspiration. All styles are welcome! Then participants will have one week to test those strategies as we collect our ideas.

SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2024 – What to do next, or “help!”

As a group, we’ll talk about our progress, and work on problem-solving. Questions of repetition, ornament, surprise and conclusion will inform our treatment of a few  ideas.
Participants will then have two weeks to finish a short piece.

SUNDAY 1 DECEMBER 2024 – Performances & Feedback

Participants will each present a short composition, either as live performance or recorded mp3, for shakuhachi. As a group, we’ll then share our feedback, frustrations, and discoveries with an eye on future composing.

Chris Molina, shakuhachi composer and performer, will present Composing for Shakuhachi – A Beginner’s Guide for Turning Ideas into Music on November 10, 17 and then on 1. December. The three-sessions.workshop is open to all levels, and there is no composing experience required. All you will need is either a simple app or software in order to record your ideas.

The first session of the course will cover creative strategies for generating ideas, and look at musical examples for inspiration. All styles are welcome! Then participants will have one week to test those strategies as we collect our ideas.



In the second session we will discuss our progress, and work on problem-solving. Chris will introduce strategies of e.g. repetition, ornament, surprise and conclusion will inform our treatment of a few ideas. Participants will then have two weeks to finish a short piece.

Chris Molina

Chris Molina is a composer and shakuhachi performer based in Tokyo. His music draws on East Asian and Western classical traditions, jazz and folk, as well as aesthetics relating to the natural world. A graduate of the Universities of Michigan and Hawai’i, his dissertation addresses the vocabulary of Tōru Takemitsu‘s mature orchestrations.

His works have been premiered by the Takács and St. Petersburg Quartets, the Shanghai Philharmonic, the University of Michigan and Sage City Symphonies, by gayageum virtuoso Jiyoung Yi and koto virtuoso Mieko Miyazaki.
