About

The season starts off on the 2. November with the new format of ESS Shakuhachi Sunday Brunch, a mix of informal gathering and formal teaching open to all levels, but in particular we welcome all you shakuhachi beginners and elementary players. The Sunday Brunch is a free event to attend and will be led by an experienced shakuhachi player and teacher. Each brunch starts off with blowing some ro-buki together to get into the spirit, followed by an open forum where we will accommodate teachings about techniques, an open mic kind of slot, where you can present your playing to get feedback from the session leader, talks and other type of presentations or discussions as well as Q & A about shakuhachi related issues. Finally the last hour or so, there will be a specific piece taught.

Our ‘Chef de partie’ for the first Sunday Shakuhachi Brunch on 2. November is Daniel Lifermann. Afterwards, we have two more ESS Sunday Brunch events lined up for you: Hélène Seiyu Codjo on 2. March 2025 and tba 4. May 2025. Don’t miss them.

Daniel Lifermann

Daniel LIFERMANN, born in 1950, started flute with grand master Fernand CARATGÉ at “École Normale de Musique de Paris” (1970-1974).

Travelling in Japan in 1983 he encountered shakuhachi players. Back in France he first learned from Franck NOËL (a student of the famous Katsuya YOKOYAMA) then he learned from Yoshikazu IWAMOTO (a follower of Katsuya YOKOYAMA) from 1989 to 1997. Since 1999 he became a follower of Teruhisa FUKUDA (the founder of Hijiri Kai school) with whom he organizes master classes regularly. In 2008 he received from Teruhisa FUKUDA his teacher’s licence dai shihan (grand master) and the name of SEISOKU (Holly Breath).

Daniel teaches from 1988 and he founded in 1995 the French association “La Voie du Bambou” whose aim is to practice and spread shakuachi in France and counts 30 members.

Daniel participated in numerous events on radio, TV, concerts of japanese traditional music, contemporary music, theater, in hospitals, etc.

Daniel focuses on a spiritual approach of shakuhachi music. Even if shakuhachi is a very representative of japanese aesthetic, Daniel considers this music as a universal expression of human soul through concentration and devotion.
